A better understanding of what quantities of nutrients our dogs need and what they use them for, will help us choose and feed them healthier diet.
The nutrients our dogs need include:
1) Proteins and amino acids- dogs can't survive without these and there are about 20 amino acids dogs need out of which there are 10 important ones they can't synthesise and must be included in their diet eg arginine, methionine, histidine etc. Protein is very important in dogs because it's what is used to build up and repair body tissues. Hairy dogs fed high protein diet do better . Dogs have the penchant of choosing high protein diet meals if many choices are placed before them. So, put this in mind when thinking of what to feed your dogs.
2)Fats and fatty acids - gotten from animal fat and seed oils of various plants. It provides the most concentrated source of energy in the diet. Puppies fed ultra low fat diet develop dry coarse hair and skin lesions that becomes increasingly vulnerable to infections. Deficiency in omega 3 fatty acids can be associated with vision problems and impaired learning ability.
3)Fibers are also needed in the diet although in small quantities.
4) Minerals especially calcium and phosphorous as this helps in bone formation and maintenance. Also many more that are needed in metabolic processes of the dog.
Vitamins too are of utmost importance despite the fact that very small quantities are needed.
Research has shown that puppies need diet that are richer in proteins to enable rapid growth while adult diet can contain up to 50% carbohydrates, 2.5%-4.5% fiber, 5.5% fat and 10% protein.
Note that recovering dogs need more energy. Also, you need to monitor the number of times and portion of food fed to your dogs to prevent overweight or under-weight. For puppies, feeding smaller portions about 3 or 4 times a day works while feeding larger portions once or twice a day to bigger dogs is better.
A very important part of your dog's meal is water. It must be given plenty fresh and clean water because normal metabolic activities are not possible without water. And that's why we advocate the use of Dog's Delight for your growing and adult dogs.
